Motor Technologies Used in SATCOM Systems

Our previous blog focused on Where Motors Are Used in SATCOM Systems, while this article follows on from that, it explores some of the motor technologies used across SATCOM applications.

For a detailed overview of motors for SATCOM systems and factors to consider when choosing a motor, download our Technical Guide to Motors for SATCOM Systems.

As direct drive solutions continue to be widely used, the most suitable motor always depends on the specific application.

Frameless Motors

Frameless motors are suited to direct drive systems, integrating directly into the gimbal or positioning mechanism. By eliminating the need for a gearbox, they can improve reliability, precision and mechanical simplicity.

Antenna tracking systems, satellite pointing mechanisms and optical communication terminals are some examples of SATCOM applications where frameless motors can be used.

Traditional Motor Technologies

While direct drive solutions are becoming more common, traditional motor technologies remain the right choice for a wide range of systems. Across many SATCOM applications, brushless DC(opens in new tab), brushless AC(opens in new tab) and AC motors continue to be used.

Slotless Motors

Slotless motors are commonly used where smooth torque output and precise speed control are essential, such as in reaction wheel assemblies.

The slotless design eliminates cogging torque while also reducing weight, making these motors well suited to space applications where efficiency, reliability and compact packaging are critical; supporting the precise, low-vibration performance reaction wheels depend on.

Axial Flux Motors

Axial flux motors are well suited to applications where installation space is limited, as they provide high torque density within a compact package.

In SATCOM, this includes some ground-based tracking systems, where their torque density and low-profile footprint are a good fit for space-constrained mounting.
