Medical Success Story

High speed web-tension control with position synchronized slitting

Problem

A global leader in blood testing diagnostics required rolls of medical media to be slit and rewound through an intricate slitting, winding, and backing paper system. Maintaining consistent web tension was critical to avoid tears, wrinkles, or misfeeds. Traditional PLC-based systems lacked the responsiveness to adjust tension as roll diameter and speed changed, leading to material waste and inconsistent product quality.

Solution

Allient intelligent servo drives can combines indexing and real-time tension control in one drive. Tension is set in engineering units and regulated through motor torque without external logic. Operators can switch between torque, position, velocity, or tension modes during operation.

Key Insights

Integrating tension control into the drive simplifies the system and improves response. The drive high speed control loop ensures precise handling of delicate media with fewer components, faster commissioning, and consistent quality—even as web conditions change.

Medical Success Story

Bottle Inspection, Labeling, Cap Crimping & Leak Tester

Problem

A global leader biological analytic products needed a high-speed inline inspection system with synchronized labeling and capping operations before a final leak test.

Solution

Allient engineered a multi-axis control system with cam synchronized servo drives for vision inspection, labeling with code verification, and high-speed capping with leak detection.

Key Insights

Success was achieved by solving the feeder bowl challenges of the bottles onto the testing line with a robot. Then tight coordination and fast reaction controls for the vision inspection and capping operations.

Aerospace Success Story

NASA Vehicle Stabilizer Test Fixture (VSTF)

Problem

The objective was to simulate rocket launch pad conditions while managing vibration impacts on sensitive fuel and electrical connections in a highly rugged environment. These conditions required precise and reliable control during extreme operational scenarios.

Solution

To meet these demands, we deployed the SMLC-e motion platform with control over 140 axes. The system was delivered in UL508A-certified enclosures and included full application programming and comprehensive testing to validate performance and durability.

Key Insights

During development, a new Torque Sharing feature was created, allowing multiple servo motors to drive the same electromechanical mechanism. This innovation increased available torque and enabled synchronized operation for higher precision and mechanical efficiency.
